Play Therapy

In July, 1998 CHR was awarded a grant by the St. Clair County United Way to provide Play Therapy.  Play Therapy is a treatment technique utilized as a medium for expression and communication between child and therapist.  Therapeutically, a child’s play is seen as an attempt at psychological integration.  This is done through the process of  reflecting back to the child his or her wishes or convictions.  The articulation of that which the child conveyed is considered therapeutically effective.  The purpose is to help children with problems through play activities.

Children who have been raised in poverty stricken environments have a multitude of issues that place them at higher risk.  Parental abuse or neglect, substance abuse issues and sexual abuse may have traumatized some of these children.  Parents working at minimum wage or low paying jobs struggling to cover the cost of living  contribute to an environment of tension and acting out that takes its toll on children.  These children need to be able to verbalize their painful feelings and experiences in order to achieve psychological integration and growth.

The objectives of Play Therapy are to allow children to relieve stress, tension, frustration and anxiety; to provide children with a protected and safe environment called a “Play Room”;  to help children learn to use play as a representation of expression, communication, language and meaning; to encourage creativity and imagination.
