Benefits of Employee Assistance Programs
for Employers

Dealing properly with employee stress can go a long way to improve workplace performance. Personal problems often become personnel issues not only because they can affect the employee’s job performance but also because of the potential impact on co-workers and colleagues.

Workers experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse problems, marital / family problems, legal problems and financial concerns contribute to lower productivity and poor work quality, conflicts with co-workers and supervisors, absenteeism, tardiness and morale problems. Their employers experience higher costs which appear in increased use of medical benefits, accidents, workers’ compensation claims, disciplinary action, security costs, litigation, employee relations problems, turnover, retraining and recruitment.

An Employee Assistance Program is a comprehensive service that is based on the early identification of employees with emotional or substance abuse problems. EAP’s provide assessment of treatment needs, referral to the appropriate level of treatment, interface with external resources, appropriate follow-up and training to help supervisors identify and assist employees with problems.

EAP’s have been growing in popularity. Currently 88% of Fortune 500 companies provide their employees with this service. An employer’s savings can be substantial. A Utah program reports almost $4.00 returned for each dollar invested. Another company has experienced a 28% reduction in mental health care costs. A California State study found a substance abuse treatment savings ratio of $7.00 to $1.00. A Virginia employer realized a 23% drop in medical claims.

The employer and all employees also benefit from a more stable, less stressful working environment that allows for greater productivity and improved performance. The EAP is an ounce of prevention in the employee well-being arena.
